I bought this back then for my 1.5 years old son. I'm the only Mandarin Chinese speaking parent. His dad is Caucasian. I wanted my son to pick up on some easy Chinese words. The DVD does a good job. The only complaint I have is that sometimes Jade only introduce a word only once and didn't reinforce it later which I think is not good since we learn best from repetition. My son is now 2 and he still asks for it sometimes. He now knows all the words in the DVD but is slow to speak it.

I had already purchased the other Jade dvd available for sale here, and it was a hit with both my young children (ages 5 and 3) and the tweens I teach Chinese too. Even though the Jade series is aimed for young children, it is also proving to help students who do not have any Chinese speaking background at all.
What I appreciate most about Jade is the fast paced repetition that she goes through--she asks for language recognition in a variety of ways so that learning does not become boring. This dvd is very good at clumping the basic essentials and presenting them through play and simple games. Also, Jade provides interesting cultural references with what she teaches, which is nice cultural touch.
Her character and personality seem very pleasant, and she is lively enough to watch. My children very much enjoy responding to her via TV. Even though a live teacher would be best, it is nice to pop this in when I need to cook dinner but do not want my children to watch something mindless. It is also a nice light hearted review for the tweens I teach, as they also need to learn simple everyday things like counting and colors. Watching a dvd is a nice change of pace that makes learning more relaxing at times.

The best thing about Jade series is when she sings songs in English with a few chinese words, like Incy Wincy Zhi Zhu climbed up the water spout. My daughter has learned so much vocab with this technique, and it is also eaiser for parents who cannot speak Chinese to sing rhymes like this around the house dropping in the occassional Chinese word.

This DVD has been the most effective teaching style for my 7 year old. She has workbooks, coloring book, and music cd, but she recalls the video teaching the most of all.
