I think this is most useful when your child can read English as they can read the pingying and pick it up themselves without much help. My 5yo just kept reading one book after another. However, it gets hard fast as the sentences get longer and the characters harder to memorize. I was amazed at how quickly he was able to start speaking Chinese. The back of the front cover has all the English so if you don't speak English, you'll need to do some matching. But all the info is there so it's good.
The only thing is the vocab selection - not very useful in everyday conversation, but it's a start. I would have preferred pictures that were realistic, rather than cartoonish because the kids at this age would use pictures to match what the words are and it's not that easy to match. For example, the picture showing a sheet of paper didn't look like a piece of paper. The backpack didn't really look like a backpack. If that was more obvious, it will make it even easier to pick up.

This is a great set of simple books to start recognizing chinese characters. The books are simply drawn and include the pinyin which is helpful. As you progress through the book, they remove the pinyin, so you try to recognize the characters.

My 7 yr old is learning Chinese. I really like the variety of useful subjects. She can alsolearn simple sentence structure. The pinyin is there for help and I like the repetitive structure, too. Simple but colorful illustrations also help.

Really great for moms like me that are not fluent in Mandarin. Got them mainly to learn basic sentence structure, but my 4 year old is already starting to recognize the characters. I have purchased many books with same goal but nothing else like it out there
