This textbook teaches different elements of Chinese language all at once, but little by little: radicals, stroke order, vocabulary, conversation, pinyin, are taught together unlike another curriculum I have where pinyin is taught first, then writing characters, then conversation. This works well, but I think it can also be confusing sometimes for the younger ages. My daughter is six and sometimes the lessons seem a little jumbled for her. Still, we enjoy the book and you learn a lot.

Good start for kids who does not speak Chinese at all, 'cause the book starts with Phonics and simple strokes. But it goes very quickly into complecated words which can hardly offer a solid foundation of learning and writing/memorizing the Chinese characters. Overall a good entry-level book for education purpose, but needs good native speaker to build on teaching structure.

I think this is a great textbook, with nice pictures and fun songs. My 6 year old son really enjoys working with this book. There is pinyin associated to most Chinese characters, except in a few places where some radicals are translated into English, but no pinyin is given (this is not a problem, though). With the help of the CD, my son was able to learn how to distinguish the four intonations of the words. A number of exercises in the textbook/CD is to identify the correct intonation pronounced in the CD. I think it would be really helpful if the book provided a solution key for these exercises (this would be helpful for people using this book without a teacher or tutor).

Great books! Textbook and workbook are wonderful! Neither my husband or I are of Chinese descent or speak Chinese. We wanted our kids to learn Mandarin since the Chinese influence is growing globally by leaps and bounds. Our kids' Chinese tutor highly recommended these books. We believe that starting to learn foreign languages at a young age is much easier for the brain to acquire. My kids are 6 and 7 and wish we started a little earlier. However, that are also learning Spanish and Greek ( my native language).

I looked everywhere to find a set of book to teach children Chinese. I ordered this set from [...]. I like the cute pictures, practical sentences, radicals. The only thing is each book has very similar themes. Each book repeats the themes and gets just a little bit harder, so four textbooks are similar. I wish it has more themes. I looked the workbook and felt that it is for the children who wants to learn how to write Chinese. It has very different sytle to the textbook. All in all, I'm happy with these books. It saved me lots of time.
