Comments about Sing 'N Learn Chinese CD & Book:
Even though each have their pros and cons, I liked this set better than the "Teach me Chinese" series.
Pros:
-This set has a singer who is able to sing better in tune.
-The Chinese lyrics match the songs MUCH BETTER, which allows kids to follow the words easily.
-The book isolates certain vocabulary words and has an accompanying picture to reinforce the vocabulary.
-There is both simplified and traditional Chinese along with pinyin and English translations for ALL songs.
-The CD has all the songs repeated using just instrumental so that you can try singing the songs without prompting from the original singer.
Cons:
-Some of the songs could have been recorded slower to accomodate Chinese learners
-Kids voices could have been used in the recording to appeal to younger ones
Not really cons, but something that would have made it better:
-The songs could have been sung in English too, so that kids get a sense of the songs in both languages on one CD. (Teach Me Chinese uses both languages).
-It would have been fun to make up a story to weave all the songs together (Teach Me Chinese does this).
Overall, a worthwhile set to get!

Fun songs that I play for my 18 month old at home and in the car. Has pin yin so that I can learn the songs and sing along.

This was not an immediate hit in our family. The woman's voice was higher than I like and the words were sung so quickly it was hard to catch them. However, I am starting to appreciate it. The book is wonderful. It has the lyrics in traditional characters, simplified characters, Pinyin, and English. The pages also have easy to color illustrations. There's useful information on pronunciation and a good glossary at the end. But it's going to take more of a concerted effort than I anticipated to learn the songs. I think I'm going to have to go over the lyrics a few times in the book first with my daughter and then try to sing along.

The book is great. The CD is well done. I like the 2 tracks for each song-1 with words, 1 without words. I do wish that kids vocals would have been used, as it is done in a classical style which is more difficult for my girls to sing along with to the CD.

Learning through music is second only to immersion - you can't hear all the tones with singing but it is a good start. I recommend it for 'ear training' too - even if families only play it in the car every week. I think "Teach Me Chinese" is a bit easier for English speakers to use.
