Comments about Families of China DVD:
My nearly 4 yr old son and I loved this dvd. It follows one day in the life of a rural boy and a urban girl in China from waking in the morning to bedtime at night. They are both 9 yrs old, quite a bit older than my son, but he was fascinated, as was I. We get to see their meals, their school routines, how they get to and fro, what their mothers and fathers do during the day (work and home life), what they do with their friends, and some extended family members. We get to see their villages/city, their schools, their homes.
We invited our Chinese tutor (native from Beijing) over to watch with us and she said it made her nostalgic, that it was just exactly like that in China. It is nice to know it is highly representative of real life there.
It was so informative, with the children's voices narrating in English, and excellent photography. But also engaging enough that we have watched it together at least four times in a week, and my son watched it again several times by himself. He was adopted from China, and he was fascinated to see all the children "with black hair like ME!".
I think it is wonderful for kids outside China to see life in China, and also for children who are Chinese in heritage to see children where Chinese is the majority population. It would be appropriate for school groups as well, if they are studying life in China. It has so much cultural information, simply and appealingly presented. This is one in a series of Families of the World that cover many countries.
I just wish that it had a Mandarin voice-over option. It would have been wonderful to hear what the Chinese words for all those places, actions and things were.

This is favorite of my kids. It's interesting to see the 2 different lifestyles of the children in the video. One is a city girl and the other is a country boy.
